A spring day in 2009 at Berlin Zoo turned terrifying when a woman jumped into the polar bear enclosure during feeding time.

The 32-year-old, later identified as Mandy K. from Herzberg, swam toward the bears, prompting panic among visitors. One bear attacked as she tried to escape. Zookeepers threw life rings and meat to distract the animals. Mandy suffered multiple deep wounds but was eventually pulled to safety and survived.

Authorities said the bears were not at fault, as they acted instinctively. Mandy had been facing personal struggles, including job loss, debt, and a recent breakup, suggesting her actions may have been a cry for help.
